So many events are happening today it could make ones head explode. First we have Cinco de mayo which is not really the Mexican Independence day everyone thinks it is.However, Cinco de Mayo is a date of great importance for the Mexican and
Chicano communities. It marks the victory of the Mexican Army over the
French at the Battle of Puebla. Although the Mexican army was eventually
defeated, the "Batalla de Puebla" came to represent a symbol of Mexican
unity and patriotism. With this victory, Mexico demonstrated to the world
that Mexico and all of Latin America were willing to defend themselves of
any foreign intervention. Especially those from imperialist states bent on
world conquest.
In the US, the "Batalla de Puebla" came to be known as "5 de Mayo" and many people wrongly equate it with
Mexican Independence which was on September 16, 1810.People of Mexican
descent in the United States celebrate this significant day by having parades, mariachi music, folkloric dancing, other types of festive
activities, and of course Fashion. So stand next to the mariachi band in style and check out these Mexican and Chicano inspired fashions.

Second, we have the Kentucky Derby. Also referred to as :The Run of The Roses" or "The Most exciting two minutes in Sports". The classic American horse race, the Kentucky Derby is the oldest
consecutively held Thoroughbred race in America. It is run annually on
the first Saturday in May at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. The first Kentucky Derby was held May 17, 1875, before a crowd of 10,000
from around the city, state and surrounding areas. In that race, a
field of 15 three-year-olds ran a 1.5 mile course which was won by H.P.
McGrath's Aristides. Although the first Derby was held at 1.5 miles, the
distance was changed to the current 1.25 miles in 1896. The fastest Derby was run by the legendary Secretariat, who covered the 1
1/4 miles in 1:59 2/5, the only Derby winner to finish under two
minutes.
